Break a Leg, Lord
All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. – Isaiah the Prophet
Recently, I read that it was common for a shepherd to break the leg of a rebellious sheep, leaving it unable to walk for several weeks. The shepherd would then have to carry the sheep on his shoulders until the leg healed. During this time, the sheep would hear the voice of the shepherd, feel his touch, and smells his scent. When the sheep recovered, it would stay near to the shepherd at all times, even tripping him up at times, because the sheep had experienced the comfort of being near its master.
I raised some pigs in my high school years and remember the agony (for me and the pigs) of castrating them. If you ever want to hear the purest of squeals from a pig, take a scalpel to its private area. You don’t just cut them off, you cut them out! You rip them out! Then, to protect them from worms, you must spray something to that area daily. You have to be quick with that. They are watching you like a hawk after the surgery. Personally, I think it would emotionally be harder to break a sweet little sheep’s leg.
You and I both know that God doesn’t take pleasure in breaking us, but I praise Him for His tough love. He wants us close to Him because it’s the sweetest place for us to be. Paul made it clear that he wanted to know Christ above all else. He considered it all worthless in comparison (read Philippians 3:1-11). Do you think like Paul? Do you know God’s scent, touch, and voice in an intimate way? If you are lost, I have hope that He will find you. If you are being rebellious, He loves you enough to break you.
Do you think David was looking back on his shepherd days as a boy when he wrote in Psalm 51, “…let the bones that you have broken rejoice”?
